• Content Warnings for Character: Majority will be emeto warnings, but I will keep the detail mild. Excessive use of Ochako’s quirk causes nausea and sometimes vomiting, though she has better control nowadays. Mild trauma mentions, mild death/loss mentions, scenarios regarding disasters/disaster relief, will tag as any more appear within threads. Emeto is the biggest one.
Character Background
• History: Here is the wiki!!
• Core Relationships:
Her Parents: Out of everyone in Ochako’s life, her mother and father are, without a doubt, the most important to her. They are the reason she chose to pursue becoming a Hero, and truly shape so much of Ochako’s personality and character. It’s the sole reason they are number one on this list, because failing to mention them would be a disservice to just how much they mean to her and how important they are.
Ochako grew up poor. Her mother and father run a failing construction company and are constantly working to just make ends meat and keep the company from going under and providing for their young daughter. They’re tired, stressed, and understandably very anxious about the future. Even as a child Ochako picked up on this, but they never, not once, treated her with hostility or aggression. They nurtured and loved her with every bit of their hearts and gave her as much as their meager earnings could. And in turn, Ochako desperately wanted to give back that same love and devotion to the wonderful parents that worked themselves to the bone to help her grow.
From the moment Ochako developed her quirk, when she was perhaps four or five years old, she made a promise in her heart that she would become a Hero. She would become a strong, prosperous, top-ranked Hero with a large government stipend and save up enough money to give back to her beloved mother and father who looked after her all these years. Who reared her into a kind, generous, charitable soul who loves unconditionally and gives back tenfold with little to no expectation of getting anything back. That has been Ochako’s goal for quite literally the last decade, doing all she could just to save up enough money to make her parents’ lives easier. She loves people smiling and happy, so seeing her dear parents constantly stressed and tired broke this poor girl’s heart, and she resolved herself to go the distance for them, despite them telling her to pursue her own dreams, for herself, and that alone would make them the most happy. Never, not once, did her parents stop supporting her, and trying to make Ochako grow into something that SHE would be happy with.
Out of everyone, Ochako’s parents come first. She will always think about them, love them, and do what she can for them. Though her goals have changed over the course of the series - helping and saving all people, even Heroes themselves - Ochako still thinks of her parents with the most import and fondness. It’s canon that she selflessly (and recklessly) skips meals sometimes so she can save up money to give back to them. Her generosity is a pro and con, and though she is selfless, Ochako also needs to realize that harming herself for the sake of giving to others isn’t as heroic as she thinks it is.
Midoriya Izuku/Deku: Izuku (Deku) Midoriya is the first person Ochako met and became friends with even before entering UA. She first met him outside of the entrance exam building, stopping him from tripping over his feet from nerves. She’s always been a gracious and kind person, but that one interaction really changed everything for Ochako when it came to Deku. Though Deku is known for his own selflessness, to the point of being dangerous and reckless to himself, he recognized Ochako when she was trapped under some debris (and overused her quirk so couldn’t lift it to save herself) and immediately rushed in to save her from a huge battle mech that targeted her. All at the sake of not only his life (he broke his arms and legs using his then unmastered quirk and was falling from a great height), but also his place in UA…as the mech he fought off was worth zero points in the exam. Ochako was the one that ended up saving him at the last minute, slapping him, activating her quirk on him to make him float, and effectively keeping him from hitting the ground and injuring himself considerably. Not only did she save his life, but that single act earned her enough rescue points in the exam to gain the number three spot in overall score between ALL the potential applicants to UA High. Truly, without Deku, she may not have gotten as far as she did. And recognizing this, Ochako even tried asking one of the UA teachers, the Pro Hero Present Mic, to give some of her points to Deku, because she saw he didn’t score any at all…and felt he earned his place among other heroes, because the act he showed then are there, to Ochako, was that of a True Hero - helping when people need help, regardless of any reward.
From then on, the two became fast friends when Ochako learned Deku was in her class as well, and her bubbly, kind, energetic personality paired well with his own rather goofy, nerdy, bumbling attitude. They are two dorky kids and extremely good friends, and Ochako well and truly trusts Deku unconditionally to have her back at all times. He proved that already, after all. But, the two work together well on missions, listen to each other, and build off each other’s strengths. They’re often paired up, and when they are, Ochako trusts in Deku’s intellect and skill to see them through. He’s a planner, extremely intelligent, and highly resourceful. She follows his direction because she knows that he’ll usually have the best plan in mind, and make use of her strengths.
Later on in the year, because Ochako’s admiration of Deku grew and grew, and she viewed him as the ideal Hero, she slowly started to get a small crush on him, too. A lot of people seemed to poke at the idea she liked him, and after a while, Ochako already realized it, too. She wanted to be like Deku - strong, smart, reliable, and heroic. Time and time again, she’d think to herself “I’ll win, just like Deku”, or “what would Deku do?” because her belief in him was so high. Her admiration grew into a romantic attraction and childish affection, but she never really acted upon it yet in canon. In fact, because of how focused she is on her goals, and the knowledge that Heroes usually don’t enter into romantic relationships because of how high risk their line of work is, she sought to “put those feelings away” and march forward toward her goals instead. This doesn’t mean that Ochako still doesn’t have a crush on Deku, or not like him, quite the opposite!! She’s purposefully repressing her feelings for him because she knows now isn’t the time to act on them. They have more serious matters to address, and if/when she’s ready, or still likes Deku, she may act on them. Until that time, if it ever comes, he remains her dearest and closest friend.
Bakugou Katsuki: Though many might say Ochako and Bakugou never really had a relationship from the start, and that she disliked or even hated him, that cannot be farther from the truth. Ochako never really had an opinion of Bakugou from early canon aside from thinking his outlandish behavior was entertaining and that he had some relation to Deku. In fact, it was Ochako that was the first person in the series to actually acknowledge Bakugou’s bullying of Deku in the open, but it wasn’t to berate or judge the blond teen, but to simply make a statement. “Bakugou is the one that bullies you, right?” Ochako didn’t like the behavior, but she knew it wasn’t her place to bring it up, and clearly there was something bigger at play between the two boys that she had no part in.
Outside of that, Ochako did start to rightfully fear Bakugou at a certain point, and I believe it stemmed from the point where Deku and Ochako were forced to combat Bakugou and Iida (another classmate and friend to the former two) in a training exercise. Bakugou went off on his own, fueled by his grudge toward Izuku, and acted ruthless to the point where he genuinely endangered Deku’s life, and would have easily done so again had All Might not put a stop to it. For the first time, Ochako saw the part of Bakugou that was actually frightening and rightfully began to be intimidated and fearful of him. He was a strong and ruthless person, aggressive and fierce, and would have no issue with throwing hands with anyone, for even the slightest transgression.
However, much of that perception would be turned on its head after her battle with him at the Sports Festival. Ochako was slated to fight Bakugou in 1v1 combat at an annual tournament held by UA. It was part of the finals for said sporting event, and hundreds of thousands of people would be watching, as the Sports Festival was a global event that took over the Olympics in popularity in the canon world. Naturally, Ochako was terrified to face her barbaric classmate in such a way that he would, and could, get away with going at her with his full strength, and not hold back. However, Ochako had the opportunity to take Deku up on an offer of help - a strategy he came up with on the fly to combat Bakugou’s adeptness at combat and his powerful quirk.
Ochako refused.
Wanting to show her own strength, she faced down the scariest person in her class boldly, and threw herself at Bakugou again and again while he countered with powerful explosions and heavy hits. She took each head on, and actually surprised him with a few clever tricks and strategies of her own. Using the smoke of his explosions as cover, floating her sports jacket to act as a distraction, and catching him off guard to try and close in on him. Again and again Ochako tried to overpower Bakugou, but he wouldn’t go down. Of course, the crowd thought Bakugou was toying with Ochako, seeing the vast difference in their strength, and booed him, saying to get it over with and “just knock her out of the ring”. Not a single person, out of thousands, thought Ochako was worthy of standing against Bakugou Katsuki. The only two people who recognized her strength, her resolve, her determination to always get back up and fight to the last dregs of her strength…were Aizawa, her teacher, and Bakugou himself.
He didn’t let up because he acknowledged her strength in coming as far as she did. He knew she would be going all out to win, just like him, so he took her seriously. He never dropped his guard, because he respected her tenacity, and the fire that drove her on to keep getting up. Ochako even pushed Bakugou to his absolute limit with a last ditch Meteor Shower - an avalanche of debris from the arena that Bakugou’s explosions created. They would effectively crush him and her, but give her an opening to try and strike. It was her last chance, but Bakugou used his strongest explosion to blow it all back. Had he not, Ochako could have won against, and he even admitted it by saying “that was a close one” after his arm and wrist were shaking and twitching from the knockback of his quirk being strained so much.
Needless to say, Ochako lost the battle. She used up all her strength, and Bakugou’s relentless attacks had her falling unconscious. However, he defended her when he rejoined his classmates while Ochako was sent to the infirmary. Kaminari called him out saying “how could you do that to such a frail girl?” and Bakugou scoffed, responding with a gruff, “what part of her was frail?” This was the first time in canon that Bakugou acknowledged anyone else, other than actual Pro Heroes, as being strong, and complimented someone so obviously. He respected Ochako’s resolve, her desire to win, and her wit. Ochako also realized that Bakugou was a very straightforward person, and that to earn his respect, you needed to come at him with everything you had, and not hold back.
After that point, Ochako saw Bakugou as less scary and more of a passionate sort of person. He did things his own way, and though it may be different from the norm, it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. She stopped being afraid of him, and actually started to think of him as a friend that she genuinely cared about. When he was kidnapped at the Summer Training Camp, she was worried about him like crazy, and the guilt of not going to rescue him at Kamino has eaten away at her and has been referenced constantly in canon. Bakugou is important to Ochako, and he is her friend, despite having not interacted as much in canon other than a few pieces here and there. The two have a mutual respect of one another that grew over time in canon as well as the time they spent in Jikan, which I will touch on later.
Asui Tsuyu: Tsuyu is Ochako’s very best friend in canon and the one person in class she hangs out with perhaps more than even Izuku. The two hit it off almost instantly when they became classmates, sharing similar personality types and just overall working very well together. Ochako trusts every person in her class indefinitely, but there’s a whole other level when it comes to Tsuyu. Firstly, because she’s a fellow female, there’s just that whole other level of trust there, but also because the young Frog Hero (Tsuyu has a quirk that gives her frog-like features ranging from being able to climb walls, swim better/faster, breathe underwater for an extended period, and shoot out her tongue up to 20 meters if memory serves) just seems to get Ochako the most. They work best together and are constantly seen together in the series.
Tsuyu was partnered up with Ochako at the Summer Training Camp’s test of courage, they fought Toga together when she was first introduced, and their partnership and teamwork has been topnotch ever since. As Heroes in training, the two have gone to lengths to better themselves together, and even joined the same Work Study under the current number ten Hero in Japan, Ryukyu together. They are constantly powering themselves up and coming up with strong combo moves that make use of each of their quirks as well as fighting skills under Ryukyu’s tutelage and just in general. Ochako makes heavy debris float with her quirk, and Tsuyu whips it around with her tongue like a flail, among many other things. Also, because both girls want to become Rescue Heroes - though Tsuyu obviously would be better at water rescue - they also share a common goal and interest, too. They fit together like two puzzle pieces, and it’s rare to see them apart.
Thirteen: Pro Hero Thirteen is a space-themed Hero that Ochako idolizes and respects, because they are among the top ranked Rescue Heroes in the country, currently. Ochako’s desire to be Rescue Hero (that is, a Hero that deals mainly with rescue scenarios like natural disasters, evacuations, disaster relief, etc.) stems a lot from having watched Thirteen in action on the news and in the public eye. She saw how good they were at what they did and chose to mimic them, even going so far as to mimic her costume’s design slightly on their aesthetic, which is that of an astronaut.
Because Ochako has a quirk suited very well for rescue scenarios (which I will touch upon later), and her deep-seated desire to help those in need, Ochako found her calling and began to idolize the famous rescue hero and learn from their experience. Only once has Ochako actually met with Thirteen in person, which was at the USJ training facility, but when she did meet with them, she was vibrating almost as much as Izuku does when he first meets All Might. The Hero has had a big impact on her, and despite only a few interactions in canon, the effects of Hero society and Hero idolization/fame definitely shaped Ochako’s life for them, as well as pushing her toward a specific goal.
Aizawa Shouta/Eraser Head: Aizawa is the homeroom teacher of Ochako’s class at 1-A and the first-most party/individual responsible for them. He’s extremely strict, to the point where it’s borderline scary, but is so caring and responsible that Ochako has become extremely endeared to him from very early canon. Despite how strict he can be, threatening to expel those that don’t have a quirk evaluation test on their first day, Aizawa is shockingly very fair. He knows the hardships of what it actually means to be a Hero - the grief, stress, and the loss - and wants to prepare these kids for it. He’s protecting them in his own weird way, and does so continuously throughout the series. From the moment he went to bat for his class at the USJ incident, I think Ochako really felt what it was like to not only have someone risk their life to protect you, but also need to risk your life to protect others. It was a harsh lesson that Aizawa taught, but having the trust and support of someone so experienced really came through.
And though he may not always get the praise other teachers at UA get, like All Might with his immense fame and prestige as number one, Aizawa’s bond with the class is something special. He is the one that looks over them all specifically, and every student in the class knows it. They respect his authority but also they respect him and care for him. He is as much a part of their found family as anyone else is, and teaches them harsh lessons they need to learn, otherwise they’ll break down in the field or get themselves killed. Ochako especially, because after the raid on the Hassaikai, when she held Night Eye in her arms as his life was slipping away, Aizawa was there to comfort her quietly. He told her that she did her best in that situation, that sometimes just bringing back the body to the medical professionals is all one can do. Heroes need to deal with loss, it’s a constant, looming threat, but how a Hero comes back from it is what’s important. You either stop moving, stop progressing, stop growing, or you overcome.
Yagi Toshinori/All Might: As you can see, Heroes have a vast impact on the characters of this series, and All Might is no different. While his impact on Ochako specifically isn’t as high as, say, Izuku, the impact he has on the whole of Hero Society is massive and makes up a lot of the overarching message of My Hero Academia as a whole. That idol/hero worship is not a good thing, that being the “best” or “number one” at something is a destructive and lonely path, and putting an entire nation’s faith in one person is alienating and constantly stressful.
Before All Might gave up his quirk to Izuku, and could no longer sustain muscle form for a lengthy period of time, he was seen as the Symbol of Peace, the strongest Hero in the world. People truly thought he was unbeatable, and put their absolute faith in him, forgetting that he was still very much a human being as well. Ochako, being so young, and growing up in that society, fed into that narrative. To her, and everyone else, All Might was unstoppable. He could do no wrong, never be beaten, and was a Hero among Heroes. But after Kamino, things changed. Ochako put her faith in the Pros to rescue Bakugou, to defeat the League of Villains, and thus she didn’t step in to save her friend (among a slew of other reasons) because she thought it’d not only be overstepping their boundaries, but also because she well and truly believed that the Heroes would do it. That All Might would do it.
Well, he did, yes…but at a great cost. The world lost its number one, he was sent into retirement, and the Symbol of Peace was lost. To say that the nation was shaken after Kamino is an understatement, and though All Might still supports the class as their teacher even in his emaciated and skeletal form, it has changed peoples’ perception of him. Ochako still adores him as her teacher and as the former number one, but she knows that she can’t fully depend on him, or anyone, to do the saving. It’s good to have faith in others, yes, but too much faith put in one person sets them up for failure.
No, sometimes you have to be the one to move. You have to be the Hero. The shaking of the nation when All Might fell was both good and bad, had pros and cons, but for Ochako…she grew. She resolved that Heroes, too, need to be saved. That the ones suffering the most are the ones who have the weight of the world on their shoulders.
Gunhead: Gunhead, another Pro Hero in My Hero, is the first Pro Hero that Ochako worked with for her internship after the Sports Festival Arc, and one of several that actively wanted to scout her for her skills, talents, and potential as a fledgling Hero. Despite Gunhead being so far out of the realm of what Ochako wanted to do/become as a future Hero (he teaches self defense, martial arts, and is mainly a fighter/battle hero, not a rescue hero), she learned after her fight at the Sports Festival, that if she only focuses on the things she’s specifically good at, and doesn’t gain experience in all types of situations, she’ll never fully grow. For that reason, Ochako sought to grow herself as a fighter, and learned a variety of martial arts under Gunhead’s tutelage, as well as the basics for Heroes to expect once they enter the field as low-level sidekicks and workers.
From just a few short weeks, Ochako truly flourished under the surprisingly cute but stocky battle hero. He treated her well, taught her well, but also didn’t coddle her because of her small stature and bubbly exterior. Like any martial arts master, her taught her with patience, care, and respect - molding the young teen into a fully rounded individual who can not only rescue people, but who can also hold her own exceptionally well in a fight. Her hand-to-hand combat skills are especially good with her quirk, too, which relies on touch, and makes her a true force to be reckoned with, because is she deflects a blow and grabs someone, she can easily float them, change their center of gravity, and toss them away from her or into another villain/item to knock them out. And, let’s be honest…she’s not above using one dude to hit another dude. Improvised weapons don’t have to be inanimate objects, after all!
But in all seriousness, Gunhead had perhaps one of the most major influences to Ochako’s growth in terms of skill set. Without that particular experience under her belt, Ochako wouldn’t have gotten as strong as she is currently, and wouldn’t be as well rounded as a Hero. She said it herself in the series, learning more things, and going outside her comfort zone, opens up more opportunities for her growth, and it absolutely shows.
Ryukyu: Pro Hero Ryukyu is, in the world of My Hero Academia, the number 10 Hero ranked nationally in Japan, meaning she has a rather high status and years of experience under her belt. Ochako took an opportunity to do a Work Study (like an advanced internship/part time job) with the Pro Hero to learn from her and get a better understanding of what it means to be a Hero.
Ryukyu has since become Ochako’s direct mentor of sorts when it comes to field work and has taught her not only how to utilize her skills in the most effective way. Also, she taught her how to utilize other Heroes that may be on patrol in the area with her, and the sheer importance of teamwork and working as one with your fellow Heroes. Because Tsuyu/Froppy was doing a Work Study with Ryukyu as well, she and Ochako were able to learn and utilize a combo move together with Ryukyu’s teachings. Ochako grew stronger that way, and also strengthened her bonds not only with her friend but with her ability to utilize others around her. Heroes work toward a like goal - to save and to win - and being able to work with a variety of different personalities, temperaments, quirks, and battle/rescue styles is extremely important to the mission.
League of Villains/All For One: The League of Villains and All For One are the main antagonists of My Hero Academia and only really start to appear at the end of season 2 of the anime, it memory serves right. The initially showed up to attack the UA students at the USJ training facility as a means to goad All Might to appear so as to force him to fight a powerful, Frankenstein-esque monster meant specifically to do battle and kill All Might, thus ending the Number One Hero and throwing all of Japan into mass hysteria. At first, one would have assumed that the one pulling the shots was Shigaraki Tomura, but it’s learned later that he takes orders from his “master”, All For One, which is the true supervillain and direct foil to All Might.
The League of Villains mainly drive the Heroes into action as their plans to wreak havoc on the world and Hero Society as a whole develops through the story/series. For Ochako specifically, they are the driving force to become better and stronger as a Hero, because the crimes the members therein commit become bigger and bigger, and affect a wider scope of people. Ochako’s goal became to save everyone, even other Heroes, who selflessly throw themselves into danger and risk their lives day in and day out, while holding the hopes, dreams, and faith of literally millions of people on their backs until they retire. Sometimes even afterwards. More and more Ochako’s mindset is changed by the consequences of the actions of the League of Villains, and she views heroics in a much broader scope, and “saving” someone has a completely different meaning to her now as well. Suffering isn’t just physical - it can be emotional and mental, and saving someone can be as simple as lending them a helping hand, or a guiding light out of the darkness they’ve fallen into. The League of Villains and All For One may be the main antagonists of the series, but they are also the driving factor towards character development and progress, as any good villain should.
• Summary of CRAU Impact:
Despite being CRAU, the impact isn’t too large of Ochako’s core characteristics or personality. She remains mostly the same, with the same goals of being a Hero who saves people/other heroes, and she still has a deep-seated desire to earn enough money to help her mother and father live an easier, more comfortable life free from debt and the stress of being poor.
The majority of the shift is her character relationship with Bakugou, and finding herself in a situation where Heroes didn’t exist, and thus her dreams, goals, and sense of self was constantly in question. In the My Hero Academia canon, the pursuit of becoming a Hero is seen in a very favorable light - everyone who is anyone becomes a Pro Hero - so to have that sudden shift in a world that is familiar and not familiar (Jikan was set in a steampunk-esque Japanese setting) was extremely jarring. Ochako had to learn to determine what it was she wanted to do not just as a Hero (because those didn’t exist in Jikan), but what she wanted to become as a person. What her goals really were, and how she wanted to pave the future forward in this strange, new world she found herself in. In fact, the relationship she built with Bakugou was an immense stepping stone toward that, as well as with Ranpo. Those two in particular really helped shape Ochako in the setting and nail down her resolve to never stop moving, and to chase her dreams and goals no matter what the world throws at you - ANY world, for that matter. Because people need Heroes, and they can come in all shapes and sizes, powers or no powers, and in any place.
In regards to Bakugou, the change was slow, but dramatic nonetheless. While the two can vaguely be called friends in canon, their interactions are not as frequent, and the friendship is subdued at best. However, in Jikan, the two were the only ones from their canon universe at the time, and thus the only individuals to share similar goals, dreams, and desires to become Heroes. They were the only source of “home” the other had, and they shared an apartment space together as well, for ease of communication if anything went wrong. And boy did things go wrong right from the gate…
During a mini-event of sorts, Bakugou was afflicted with a curse that caused his face to lose its ability to show emotion - a “stoneface curse” if you will. It was mild, and could have been far worse had things gone differently, but neither of the teens knew the duration (which was a week if memory serves right) the curse would last. During the time it took for the curse to run its course, the two teens were forced to get close, because physical contact (in this case, handholding) lessened the symptoms, but near the end of the curse, tensions were high and a bit of large blowout happened because Ochako was losing hope in her ability to help him (and further fed into her fear of losing her sense of self as a Hero trainee) and thus began to avoid him, to which he called her out on.
In the end, they had a bit of a breakdown, revealed a lot of their hidden insecurities and vulnerabilities, and became much, much closer afterwards…because they well and truly realized that all they have are each other, and have to support one another both as Heroes and as friends. That sort of tightening of their bond will follow them into Deerington, where Ochako is more protective of Bakugou and vice versa, and more comfortable within his space and affectionate toward him.
She’s also finally realized that no matter what, her goal is to become someone who saves. The title of Hero is just that - a title - but she herself is taking great strides to become what she wants to be. Worlds cannot change that, and there will always be people in need of being saved, in all sorts of different ways.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
(2+) Positive Experiences:
Kindness/Charitability: Like I touched upon earlier, Ochako is seen as an extremely kind and generous person. A lot of her motivations come from a desire to help people, and the goodness of her own heart. From a young age, she always liked seeing people happy and smiling, and attributed that to Heroes, too. Her kindness and giving nature is a key trait, and really makes Ochako who she is - from the moment she entered canon, it was to help Deku not trip and fall at the UA entrance exam, because she thought it was bad luck, and wished him good luck and talked to him. She was the first person to really speak to and treat Deku with kindness since his time growing up around Bakugou, and before he knew her name, Deku called her “the nice girl”.
Also, her entire reason for becoming a Hero stems around the desire to give back to her parents. To help them escape poverty and live a happy, worry-free life and give them a vacation to Hawaii. Ochako’s father even calls her kind, after she breaks down on the phone when she loses to Bakugou at the Sports Festival. She is a kind person, and that caring and charitable nature will help her become an amazing future Hero.
Determined/Resolute: Another one of Ochako’s strengths is her strength and resolve. She’s a go-getter type of person, thinking that hard work and determination to pursue your goals will eventually lead to success. Because her life has always been hard, and she’s had to struggle for even the most basic necessities, Ochako knows that giving up won’t solve anything. From the time she was just a toddler, maybe five years old, she resolved to become a Hero to help her parents, and since then that has been her driving force - her dream that she’s strived for. In the face of all odds, she keeps moving forward.
Ochako shows her determination almost instantly. The UA entrance exam has an insanely low pass rate, but Ochako still resolves to see it through, and she’s determined to pass and get into the most prestigious Hero Academy out there - the same one that All Might went to for his schooling. While the written exam isn’t as difficult for most, it does still take a lot of studying, and Ochako’s only average in terms of smarts, when paired against her classmates like Deku, Iida, and Momo. Still, she passed her exam altogether and got accepted into UA, even pushing herself in the practical part of the exam, fighting battle mechs and earning battle points. She knew overuse of her quirk makes her ill to the point of vomiting, but this was her dream…her one chance to get into the Hero Academy and build her way to becoming a Pro. And wouldn’t you know it? She scored the third highest results out of all participants and got accepted.
From then on, Ochako just hit the ground running. Now that she had a shot, she had to keep moving forward at full throttle, constantly growing and changing. She couldn’t let anyone break her, even during training. During her fight with Bakugou, she showed her toughness, her resolve to win against him but being beaten down again and again but continuing to get back up and thus earning Bakugou’s respect for her fierceness and guts.
Intelligence/Adaptability: Despite not being the smartest person in her class, and perhaps being only about average in terms of academics, Ochako definitely still has her moments where you can see she’s very smart, intuitive, and resourceful. She’s very good at planning ahead and having an idea of what to do for the future. She’s extremely financially savvy because of how she needs to save up money, and though it may only be a headcanon, it wouldn’t be far-fetched to think that she’d excel in mathematics, mostly accounting and finance. Or know a lot about space and astronomy. People usually research about their quirks once they develop, to know more about them and how they work, so as to know how to best control them, especially the more powerful ones.
Ochako’s also seen to master martial arts in a very small span of time during her Internship under Gunhead, and that period of time wasn’t very long at all. Once Ochako sets her mind to something, she picks it up incredibly fast, and commits to it with a passionate fervor. She may not be crazy book smart, but she’s a fast learner and can think, act, and react very well. During her fight with Bakugou, she used the smoke from his explosions as cover to be in his blindspot, she overpowered Thirteen (on accident at first, but rolled with it after) during a UA Practical Exam, and overpowered Toga on their first encounter at the Summer Training Camp by remembering Gunhead’s martial arts and self-defense training against knife users. She’s also seen using debris created both by Deku and Bakugou’s quirks to her her advantage at different points in the series - creating a meteor shower or swinging a chunk of concrete like a battering ram to shoot rocks at an opponent as makeshift projectiles. Anything and everything, so long as it’s not held down, or above her weight capacity, can be an effective weapon to Ochako, and she knows this and uses it to the fullest.
Loyalty/Affection/Love: A lot of Uraraka’s personality also stems from a topic that surrounds her quite a bit in the series, and that’s the aspect of affection, loyalty, and most specifically - love. The love she has for her parents makes it so she wants to become a Hero to earn money for them to live better and not have to be so overworked, tired, and stressed from the pressures of being poor, and supporting not only a failing business, but a young daughter as well. From early canon, she has always been thinking of ways to save up and earn money for this sole purpose, and has even thought it embarrassing and guilty to become a Hero for the purposes of making money, but it’s because she loves her family so much, and would do anything for them, that she took the initiative to try and help them this way.
The love she has for seeing people smiling and happy promotes her ideals of being a Hero as well, and saving others, regardless of who they may be, to move forward toward a bright future. From early canon, and in more recent chapters of the manga, it is stated that since she was just a toddler, Ochako always liked seeing people smiling and happy, and she wanted to preserve and protect peoples’ happiness with her strength and abilities as a Hero.
Finally, her love for her immediate friend group, and the loyalty she has towards them. From the start of her Hero training at UA, and even events leading up to that, Ochako has always been a friendly person, and as her friendships build, she tightens those bonds even more. Being put through horrific scenarios in canon (the USJ attack, the Summer Training camp attack/Kamino, Hassaikai raid, etc.) alongside her classmates forces her to put her absolute faith and trust in these other people to support and protect her while doing the same in turn. They are not simply Heroes, they are friends and found family at this point, and would lend their strengths for any other person unconditionally. The love that Ochako has for every member of class 1-A, not only Deku but everyone therein (even Aizawa, as her teacher/mentor), is unbreakable, and she would throw herself into hell for their sake, unflinchingly.
(2+) Negative Experiences:
Recklessness: While not as bad as others in the series, Ochako still shows a level of recklessness that certainly isn’t good for someone young like herself. It’s seen as a good quality for a Hero to have, acting first for the sake of someone else, but so often the topic of reckless endangerment is brought up in My Hero canon and each character is a culprit in some way. Risking oneself for others isn’t a bad thing, but doing so in a way that’s thoughtless and careless isn’t good for anyone. Ochako is certainly no different - she goes all out when she is dead set on something, especially if that something is winning a fight or saving someone’s life. She will put that other person first, before herself, and deal with the consequences later.
You see this first, obviously, with her battle against Bakugou. Her entire plan to beat him is reckless, constantly puts her in harm’s way, and her final gambit could have just as well hurt her as it could have Bakugou. She was willing to take that risk, for the sake of victory. Ochako placed her cards down and sought only to win, whatever it took. She also endangered herself when Deku’s quirk went wild as One For All “awakened” and he was granted Black Whip during their training against Class B. While the black tendrils went out of control, putting both Deku and anyone around him in danger, Ochako was the first and only person to throw herself at her friend to hold him long enough for Shinsou to use his quirk to brainwash Deku into submission and stop the rampage of his new quirk. Ochako was struck by Black Whip during the process, having a mild laceration on her cheek, but she barely noticed it in favor of helping her friend, and was even praised for her quick action by Aizawa.
Her recklessness can be both good and bad, but most of the time Ochako is like Deku in that she doesn’t really think. If the situation is dire enough, she’ll usually leap first and think later. This can, and most definitely will in the scope of Deer’s everything, lead to negative consequences, and situations that will put her in immediate danger.
Self-Destructing behavior: While not overly talked about in canon, it is a known fact that Ochako frequently skips meals to save money. Because of her financial situation, and the fact she’s constantly trying to save money for her mother and father, she’s taken it to the extreme where she’ll simply not eat from time to time because it’s either too much to afford, or she thinks the money would be better spent giving back to others. It’s a big problem, because as a young teenager, she’s at the stage of development where getting proper nutrition is huge…and she’s extremely physically active as a Hero trainee, constantly burning calories with all the rigorous training and missions she goes through, perhaps daily.
Take into account as well, that over use of her quirk causes nausea and vomiting, it’s safe to assume that there are days where whatever Ochako does manage to eat ends up on the floor or in a trashcan where she horked it back up, and she doesn’t really eat anything at all for that day. Thankfully, living on the UA campus, where meals are provided, and several of her classmates being able to cook/bake very well does help with this situation, but it’s still an ingrained habit I may play with in game and something to note. Ochako gives so much to others that she sometimes destroys herself for their sake, thinking she’s doing the right thing. She would suffer herself so that someone else can be prosperous. It’s an extremely backwards mindset, and not heroic at all, and deep down she knows it’s shameful and embarrassing, but her mind tricked her into thinking that just a little bit is okay. She doesn’t need to have breakfast that day…
Self-Doubt/Insecurities: Another major flaw Ochako has is that she has a lot of self-doubt about herself, and is really insecure about herself. She lacks confidence in her abilities as a Hero, and mostly over being taken seriously as a Hero. She’s small, round, cute, and bubbly - a good face for the more celebrity aspect most Pro Heroes take on, but not really for battling villains and being an imposing force for evil-doers. She also believes that while her quirk is strong, it’s not as versatile or “flashy” as some of her other classmates. She compares herself to others very often, and because she doesn’t believe in herself, her own capabilities and skills, she often tries to mimic others. Deku is the primary person she tries to imitate, but there’s also Thirteen as well, which a lot of Ochako’s Hero costume was based around. Ochako wants to be seen as strong, reliable, and capable, and the people she admires are like that, so she tries to think and act like them as much as possible in early canon.
Ochako also tends to care about what others think of her as well. She wants to do her very best, usually for other people, so she craves to be seen as something worthwhile, a real Hero. I believe this stems from being told to pursue her own dreams as a child, instead of putting her all into taking care of her parents, by her own father (which is not a bad thing, and very valid for him to say). Ochako just wants to be seen as someone who can do what she sets out to do, someone who is strong. At the Sports Festival, being underestimated, and having thousands of people, thousands of Pros, want to coddle her when she was fighting her hardest against Bakugou really messed her up. Out of so many people, not a single one other than Aizawa and Bakugou himself took her seriously, and knew she had the potential to win. Thousands. And only two thought she could actually do it.
Even Iida and Deku didn’t really think she could, and that stuck with her for a while, compiling more and more after Bakugou was kidnapped and the events of Kamino occurred. Ochako didn’t participate in the rescue effort to get Bakugou back, because it was illegal for them to intervene like that, and also because she knew Bakugou would find it disgraceful to be saved. She was right, in a sense, but that regret has lingered, and festered for months. How can she be a Hero who saves people when she couldn’t even put herself out there to save her fellow classmate?
Deer Country Attributes
• Canon Powers: Canon Power - Zero Gravity: By touching someone or something with all five fingers, Ochako can remove the gravitational pull on that item/person and effectively make them weightless, and able to float. She has pads in all ten of her fingertips that activate her quirk (the canon name for superpowers in her world), that glow a soft pink color when used, though she only needs to touch an item/person with one hand to activate the power.
When Zero Gravity is in effect, anything under its effect begins to float upwards, sort of like a balloon, and the height and speed they float at seems to be dependent on Ochako’s will. She can float something just a few feet off the ground, or a few hundred feet off the ground and keep it stationary there for as long as she’s able to maintain control of her power. Touching all ten of her fingertips together and muttering the release word - simply “release” - will deactivate the power, and anything that was floating will regain its gravitational pull/weight and plummet back to the ground. Now, considering she can control how high an item or person can float up, this could result in just some bruises, maybe a broken bone, or instant death. And there is no way for anyone affected by Zero Gravity to end it themselves that is known to canon thus far.
Furthermore, the mass, height, and weight of an object doesn’t affect whether or not she can cause it to float. It can be as small as a baseball, or a coin, or as enormous and weighty as a car, or a huge battle mech. Also, using a power to increase a character’s weight will have no effect, because it’s not simply removing their weight, but the effect of gravity on their mass as a whole. They can continue to weigh more and more, but gravity will not resume on them until Ochako releases them from it.
Let it be known though, that items and people under Zero Gravity, are only immune to the effects of gravity, not velocity. So, for example, Ochako has an attack called Comet Homerun where she touches a slew of small debris and shrapnel in a surrounding area, making it float up a few feet, then strikes it with a much larger item like a support beam or column to mimic striking a baseball with a bat. The smaller items, once struck, immediately go flying outwards in the direction they’re hit, attacking enemies for some nice damage. Also, people that she touches and makes float can be grabbed, pulled, pushed, or thrown while floating as well. In fact, this tactic is Ochako’s primary strategy for fighting in conjunction with her learned martial arts (which I will detail later). Not only does suddenly being in the air momentarily stun and shock an enemy, because their footing is gone, but it makes escape and counterattack rather difficult, too, when they’re just flailing uselessly in the air.
Ochako can also use her Zero Gravity on herself, making herself float to do simple reconnaissance, escape an immediate attack, or follow up on an attack of her own after she’s floated someone up into the air. Please keep in mind that Ochako cannot fly. Just float. She cannot easily control the direction she floats, and uses wire grappling hooks in the wrist bracers of her hero costume to control direction, which are retractable. There are also springs and cushions in the heels of her hero costume boots to propel her up or cushion a fall when she’s using Zero Gravity on herself, but these only work best when she’s still on the ground and launching herself upwards or to cushion the impact on her legs and knees when she deactivates her quirk from a higher than average altitude. These items will not save her from a fatal fall. If she’s knocked out of the air from a height that would kill a human being, and impacts on the ground, she will die.
The one downside of using her quirk too much is that it makes Ochako nauseous to use if used continuously. On larger objects, and the more she uses it, her nausea increases, to the point where she will get tension headaches and even vomit. Suppression devices in her costume (belt, helmet, and even the wrist guards) help alleviate this somewhat, and she has done intense training to keep from tossing her cookies with extended use of Zero Gravity, but she still hasn’t fully mastered it, and if she uses her quirk without the nausea/headache suppression devices her costume has, it’ll be easier for her to get sick with extended use of her quirk.
Canon Power - Gunhead Martial Arts:
Nothing overly special with this, it’s just simple, average, very normal martial arts! Because Ochako’s quirk is indeed strong if put into use properly, but she never considered herself a combat fighter, she took an internship with a battle hero, Gunhead, and learned some defense/offense skills to boost her skills. She took to the skills like a fish to water, and has become quite formidable in hand to hand combat now as well, and would like to continue learning different styles of martial arts to increase her strength, endurance, and even her mind. It’s a great way of centering herself with meditation and slow breathing exercises to calm herself in intense battle scenarios, so she can think and strategize properly, as she’s prone to low self-esteem and overthinking things, and panic when they start to unravel.
She seems to prefer an open-hand battle technique where, instead of punches and kicks, she uses a flat palm or the heel of her palm to strike out, because her quirk can easily activate when she hits someone with an open palm.Striking at, or even blocking/deflecting, and especially grabbing someone aiming to strike her - even with a knife - can give her an edge where she can activate her quirk on them to make them float, tripping them up a fit, then go on the offensive with a barrage of immediate strikes while they’re effectively inert in mid air.
• Blood Type: Warmblood.
• Omen: Bear.
• Blessed Day: New Years Day - January 1st. This is an important holiday in Japanese culture and a lot of times is viewed as a renewal of oneself into the new year. Ochako is a tad superstitious in canon, and because her birthday is so close to New Year (12/27), it’s important to her. Also, she celebrates mochitsuki (mochi pounding) during the new year and mochi is her favorite snackfood.
• Patron Pthumerian: Madame Generosity.
• Blood Power Manifestation: N/A (Warmbloods do not have blood power).
